The family of Robert Edward Marker, Sr. and his wife, Esther Marguerite Casey, spans 5 generations with over 200 family members. Robert was born in Piqua, Ohio on August 8, 1899 and Esther was born in Lima, Ohio on April 12, 1903. They were married in Newport, Kentucky on September 13, 1920. Robert died September 1, 1982 and Esther died November 22, 1993. They had 17 children, 9 boys and 8 eight girls over a 24 year period. The oldest child, Robert Edward Marker, Jr. was born in 1921 and the youngest, Thomas Michael Marker was born in 1944.
Two daughters died within a year of their birth. Mary Ellen was born June 5, 1924 and died June 14, 1924. Marjorie was born June 19, 1925 and died April 24, 1926. Both girls are buried in Gethesame Cemetery in Lima, Ohio in a plot belonging to Daniel Casey (Esther's grandfather). One son, Franklin Leroy ("Hank"), was killed in the battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944 aboard the USS Birmingham. Hank's body was never recovered but a memorial marker has been placed in Greenlawn Cemetery at the foot of the graves of Robert and Esther. The family received the telegram from the war department informing them of Hank's death on November 10, 1944 which would have been his 22nd birthday. That was one day they never forgot.
